The gentle, poised movements of Taiji (or Tai Chi) are based on relaxation and harmony of body and mind. It is both a form of exercise and a martial art and can be taken up as a life long practice.
As an exercise, Taiji helps to overcome stress, generate energy, improve blood circulation, cultivate better posture and alignment, and strengthen the immune system. As a martial art Taiji can be used as self defense and to deal with any external forces. Both ways of approaching Taijji contribute to a better quality of life and a deepened sensitivity both to your body and the world around you.
The only requirements for Taiji are patience and perseverance. It is equally suitable for young and old; men and women. However, this style of Tai Chi may not be suitable for people with chronic joint, back or mental health problems. You are welcome to try the first session and see how you get on. If in doubt please consult your Doctor.
The class is taught by Sthirananda (aka Pete Fletcher), a student of Wee Kee Jin who is the principle instructor at the Taijiquan School of Central Equilibrium and internationally recognized as a senior instructor of the Huang Sheng-Shyan system of Taijiquan. Find out more about this system of Taiji by looking at the website www.taijiquan.co.nz
